Plastic Pellets – Applications and Classification

Plastic pellets have a wide range of applications. They are used in household items, the apparel industry, construction materials, the chemical industry, agriculture, and more, to manufacture various plastic products. Additionally, plastic pellets are extensively used in the electrical and telecommunications industries.

There are over 200 types of plastic pellets, and if further subdivided, there are thousands. However, only a few dozen are commonly used. In general, plastic pellets are categorized into three main types: general-purpose plastics, engineering plastics, and specialty plastics.

  • General-purpose plastics: Polypropylene (PP), Polyethylene (PE), Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Polystyrene (PS), Polyester, Polyurethane, etc.

  • Engineering plastics: Nylon, PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene), POM (Polyoxymethylene), Polycarbonate (PC), Silicone, etc.

  • Specialty plastics: Thermosetting plastics, Functional high-performance polymers, etc.

Depending on their specific properties, plastic pellets can be classified into many different types and are applied in various industries. They can also be divided into virgin materials and recycled materials. Virgin materials refer to new, unused resins, whereas recycled materials are produced from previously used or discarded plastics that are processed and pelletized again.

Recycled plastic pellets are typically graded based on the raw materials used and the characteristics of the resulting pellets. They are usually classified into Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3.

  • Grade 1: Made from unused scraps or offcuts (also known as runners or sprues), including leftover edge materials or quality-rejected raw materials during virgin processing. Pellets made from these sources have high transparency and quality comparable to virgin resin, hence often referred to as Grade 1 or premium grade.

  • Grade 2: Made from raw materials that have been used once. However, this excludes high-pressure granulation. In high-pressure granulation, imported large scraps (e.g., industrial films) are often used, which haven't been exposed to weathering, thus maintaining excellent quality. The transparency and surface smoothness of the pellets help determine this grade.

  • Grade 3: Made from materials that have been used two or more times. Pellets in this category generally have reduced elasticity, toughness, and overall quality.

Applications of Plastic Pellets

  • In daily life: Used to produce plastic bags, buckets, basins, toys, furniture, stationery, and various other household products.

  • In the apparel industry: Used to make clothing, neckties, buttons, zippers, etc.

  • In construction materials: Used for building components, tools, plastic doors and windows, plaster buckets, etc.

  • In agriculture: Used to produce agricultural films, water pipes, farming tools, fertilizer packaging bags, cement packaging bags, etc.

  • In the machinery industry: With special formulations, plastic pellets can be used to manufacture machine parts such as different types of bearings, gears, cams, idlers, sealing rings, blades, and pump impellers.
